Essential resources for pharmacology and toxicology

This is a list of important pharmacology and toxicology reading resources for the time-poor exam candidiate preparing for the CICM Part II exam. The following resources can be considered essential:

• Toxicology Handbook (4th ed) by Armstrong & Pascu is probably ALL you need.
• LITFL toxicology library is probably more than you need.
• The eTG Therapeutic Guidelines toxicology section is definitely more than you need, but is definitive and all-encompassing. 
• To also recommend the Austin clinical toxicology guidelines would seem superfluous, but they are also available as an app, which means you can access them while on the train to your exam venue.

In addition to the above, there are two excellent articles from 2002 by L.I. Worthley, which together cover the majority of the important issues, and should be viewed as essential reading:

• Clinical toxicology: part I. Diagnosis and management of common drug overdosage.
• Clinical toxicology: part II. Diagnosis and management of uncommon poisonings.

In addition to this, it is probably worth knowing some of the American (AACT) position statements:

• 2016 - intravenous lipid emulsion therapy in poisoning
• 2014 - whole bowel irrigation
• 2013 - nasogastric lavage
• 2013 - ipecac syrup
• 2009 - cathartics
• 2008 - single dose activated charcoal
• 2004 - multi dose activated charcoal
• 2004 - urine alkalinization
